Chapter Fourteen

With the strike craft defeated, Evan turned his attention back towards rebuilding his economy. He had lost two of his digesters, slowing his production more than he would like. Another had just been born, giving him two to work with and with what Kurrax had spent on her fleet she had to be on a similar number. Evan left his cruiser parked in orbit above the planet. In hindsight it was something he should have done at the start; the guns of the ship could protect the workers whilst it reduced the distance needed for them to drop off their resources.

Evan tried to focus his thoughts. Kurrax had said she had simply asked the ship to provide her with the fighters and it had given her what she had wanted. Evan tried to do the same and was pleased to see a notification appear floating next to himself.

Ki’Ma Strike Fighter

Resource Cost: 25 Biomatter

Category: Fighter

Weapons: Rapid fire Birth Point cannon—light anti-strike craft weapon.

Zero-point sublight drive.

Command Cost: One unit.

It was interesting that the strike fighter didn’t have an underspace drive like the rest of the Ash’vanar fleet, though it was likely because it was too small. When Evan had fought against them in the real world, they had been launched from a mothership like a swarm of bees emerging from a hive. Twenty-five biomass was a low cost in relation to the other ships that Evan had at his disposal, though the command cost would cause issues if he wanted to build a large swarm of them.

Another digester slid into existence and immediately began to drift towards the planet. They were odd-looking ships, even when compared to their comrades. They had a bulbous shape to them and sported two massive sacks that expanded and contracted like lungs. When they returned from the planet the sacks stayed at their fullest size and Evan assumed it was where the digested slurry of organic matter harvested from the surface was stored.

As each reached the cruiser, Evan ordered another. There had to be a hard limit on how many he could build before efficiency dropped off dramatically. Currently, each was waiting in orbit for a few moments, and he suspected once they started queueing then he would have reached that limit. There were several other planets in the system and Evan knew that in a real battle there was a good chance that they would have the same feeding spires built on them, provided they had biomass to process. The resource income of a real fleet was likely to be much higher.

Twelve command units, that was what Evan had to play with now that he had sorted out his resources. Of his twenty-two total four were being used by the corvettes whilst another six had gone into digesters. With the biomass flowing in Evan ordered ten strike fighters and then added another overmind. He would need the command units for what he had planned.

It felt like cheating a little, but Evan was using his familiarity with Kurrax against her.
